Chef Giancarlo Perbellini Hits Toronto

Michelin-starred Chef Giancarlo Perbellini is headed to Toronto as guest chef in the popular six-part Italian culinary and cultural series Sotto una buona stella (Under a lucky star). Chef Perbellini will collaborate with one of Toronto’s best chefs, Rob Gentile, on Tuesday, May 3rd at Buca Osteria & Bar in Yorkville.

Sotto una buona stella is presented by The King Street Food Company, the Consulate General of Italy, the Istituto Italiano di Cultura and the Italian Trade Commission in partnership with George Brown College’s Centre for Hospitality and Culinary Arts.

“Chef Perbellini’s vision and passion bring a modern twist on classic Italian fare,” said Giuseppe Pastorelli, Consul General of Italy. “We are honoured to have such a talented and acclaimed chef come to Toronto to share his expertise with Canadians friends.”

Born in the Verona valley, Chef Perbellini’s roots lie in the great Italian rural tradition, where the land and its produce are a fundamental resource.  He now runs seven restaurants in the Veneto region, amongst them the pastry shop Dolce Locanda, a modern take on the traditions of his family, the two Michelin star-rated Casa Perbellini (Verona), as well as a Michelin-starred restaurant Dopolavoro Dining Room in the JW Marriott Rose Island (Venice). These last three stars have been achieved with two brand new restaurants: a record in Italy.

Sotto una buona stella launched in March 2015 with Modena’s Massimo Bottura,  and has become one of Toronto’s most sought after culinary events.  Other chefs featured in the series have included Chef Andrea Berton of Ristorante Berton (June 2015), Chef Ernesto Iaccarino of Don Alfonso 1890 (Nov 2015), Chef Pino Cuttaia of La Madia (Feb 2016).

While here, Chef Perbellini will also host a special presentation of his book Casa Perbellini – Arte nella classicità at the Veneto Centre in Vaughan, as well as a master class at George Brown College’s Centre for Hospitality and Culinary Arts

Proceeds from Sotto una buona stella will support scholarship funding for students at George Brown who are interested in  pursuing a career in hospitality. The inaugural “Sotto una buona stella” and “King Street Food Company” scholarships were presented earlier this month. The series also facilitates an internship in Italy with the featured chefs.

Tickets for the May 3rd dinner event are $300 per person plus applicable taxes and can be purchased by visiting www.kingstreetfood.com.
