The Appeal Of Cider

Step aside, craft beer.  Cider is the new It Drink.

The 3rd annual Ontario Craft Cider Week starts May 27th,  with tastings and tap takeovers featuring Ontario’s small  producers at venues across Toronto.  The festivities will include the Appleseed Cider Festival at Wychwood Barns in Toronto on May 29th, the Toronto Craft Cider Cruise on Friday, June 3rd.

May also brings the opening of Her Father’s Cider Bar, Canada’s first dedicated to the quaff. Owner Joshua Mott started making cider at his parent’s Beaver Valley Cidery, so he knows his apples (sorry!).  Expect Ontario ciders on tap, as well as an extensive list of international offerings, plus Chef Ryan Barclay (Splendido, The Grove) in the kitchen.

Last year, the LCBO’s local cider sales increased by 93 percent to $4 million. Canada’s late to the game on the cider front: in Europe,  the French have been making cidre for centuries, and strong cider making traditions are still in play in Austria, Germany, Italy and the UK, where cider sales have edged towards the £1bn mark.   The success of the category has seen the rise of flavoured cider – peach, raspberry, blackberry and elderflower are now available.

Should you wish to jump on the bandwagon, here’s a solid starting point: Quebec’s Leduc Piedimonte Ice Cider, which made the Independent’s list of the Top 10 Foreign Ciders.
