Cristiano Ronaldo Makes Us Hungry

The epitome of a good year: superstar footballer Cristiano Ronaldo has won the Champions League with Real Madrid and been named the world’s highest-paid athlete in the world as well.

Forbes estimates that Portugal captain Ronaldo, who will be one of the biggest stars at Euro 2016 in France, earned a mind-blowing $88 million (£60.4m) last year.

What does a man that rich like to eat?  Ronaldo’s favorite dish is Portuguese comfort food Bacalhau à Brás – bacalhau or salt cod, eggs, potatoes, and black olives.

Summer is made for full-flavoured Portuguese cuisine: grilled chicken, seafood, garlic, wine, olive oil, pork, chourico sausage, coriander, and piri piri sauce are often combined with the smoky flavour imparted from the grill.

Are you in the mood now?  Here are three great places across Canada to raise a glass of fine Portuguese wine to Ronaldo:

Toronto:  Chiado:  Toronto’s long-term love affair with Portuguese food started here. Fresh fish is flown in from the Azores island daily.

Montreal:  Ferreira Cafe:   Ferreira has been the destination for authentic Portuguese dishes and fine wines.

Vancouver:  Casa Verde:  Authentic bright and sunny Portugese in a casual setting.
