Dining In Style

BY: ALEXANDRA GILL & MARIE-CLAUDE LORTIE

Our food-obsessed culture has turned restaurants into the ultimate interior design resource.

You don’t need to look any further than the latest “It” restaurant if you want an Instgrammable snapshot of what’s hot right now in the design universe. Here’s a look at some of the coolest design in Canada and Europe right now.

Restaurants have to be careful about what they put up on the walls because bad art can really make serious art lovers lose their appetite. At Le Serpent, in Montreal, the Pierre Dorion painting is not only seriously elegant, it’s museum-quality art that says « Here, we don’t cut corners ». Reassuring. –MCL

Martinque wallpaper, originally seen at the Beverly Hills Hotel, repurposed for Vancouver’s Ahn & Chi by House of Bohn. The classic palm print adds a bold splash of vintage glamour to the bathrooms in this modern Vietnamese eatery. Original samples available through Designer Wallcoverings Los Angeles; custom prints from Vancouver’s Metro Wallcoverings tel: 604-736-9160. –AG

Vuelve Carolina is one of Quique Dacosta’s casual restaurants in Valencia, Spain. There, the Michelin-starred chef from Denia offers creative casual food in a stylish fresh environment featuring lots of pale wood, green plants and slick modern furniture. I love the bar stools from Hay, the Danish design house. Available online in Canada from themodernshop.ca and in Montreal at Jamais Assez 5153 boulevard Saint-Laurent. tel: 514 509 3709 –MCL

Scott & Scott Architect’s custom-made LED track light for Vancouver’s pan-Asian Torafuku, winner of the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards, Americas category. The hand-stitched, harnessgrade leather box housing the transformer lends warmth to the minimal fixture and will only wear better with age. Available through Haft, the studio’s upcoming architectural hardware and furniture design company. tel: 604-737-2541.-MCL

I love everything about the bakery and breakfast restaurant Mirabelle, Copenhagen’s Relae little sister: the bread, the danishes, the coffee, and these incredibly handsome handmade blue and white tiles. The model is called Tanger Cementflise and the folks at Mirabelle bought them from The Cementile Company. They can be reached, in English, by clicking here –MCL
