The Bar at Alo, separate from the restaurant, is an elegant oasis floating three stories above Queen West’s busiest intersection that only accepts walk-ins.
But if you are fortunate enough to time your arrival just shy of sunset, you might catch a golden glow refracting through the bottles on the open-back bar that cast dreamy Impressionist ripples over your whiskey mizuwari. Mind you, there is nothing overly romantic or even a smidge fuzzy around the edges about this drink (a traditional Japanese method of mixing spirits with cold water) or any of the classically imitative, always precisely balanced cocktails on the menu. Bar manager Robin Kaufman and his staff are said to have “the gift of perfect proportion.”
