BLACK BOTTLE

The legacy of this iconic whisky — and its distinctive black bottle — began in 1879, with a tea blender in Aberdeenshire. He thought it would be a fun project to source fine whiskies and blend them for his friends— so it’s fitting that the modern expression of this whisky matches perfectly with the cocktail lover looking for an easy spirit to work with a wide variety of cocktails. Professional bartenders and amateur mixologists alike are drawn its fresh and floral aromas with hints of sawn oak and smoke. Silky and mellow with balanced sweet oak and honey and notes of vanilla, char and peat smoke. It’s great on its own too — and always when you’re spending some good times with close friends.

LEDAIG 10

A very special whisky coming from a storied distillery — one of Scotland’s oldest, founded in 1798 and the only one on the Isle of Mull. Here is a distinctive 10-year-old with a prominently peaty — intense, smoky, flavour- some — character. Balanced beautifully via ex-whisky refill Hogsheads and Butts, un-chillfiltered and bottled at 46.3 percent — this is a small-batch, connoisseur’s whisky for enjoying after a long work day or as a night cap. Everything works in harmony — and though there’s some muscle here, there’s also plenty of rich island character. Tantalizing grassy, malty, gingerbread and stewed fruit on the nose, leading to a palate of more fresh and dried fruit, spice and aniseed, with bitter chocolate and almond on the finish. The oak is polished, elegant, gently fading with a tail of sweet salty seas.

BUNNAHABHAIN 12

Here’s a whisky that calls for quiet contemplation — a spirit so complex you need to give it full attention. Or rather, it commands your attention. The distillery’s roots reach to 1881. In Gaelic, Bunnahabhain means “mouth of the river”—in this case, the Margadale Spring on the shores of the Sound of Islay. Bunnahabhain whiskies are matured mostly in ex-sherry casks and are unpeated and natural in colour resulting in rich and complex single malts. This 12-year-old Islay single malt was introduced in 1979 and it’s the ideal reward for the end of a long week (or day). Floral and fruity on the nose, with delicate smoke and sea air. Supple, with nutty, vanilla and caramel. Full bodied, with a lingering finish, this is a very seductive whisky.

DEANSTON VIRGIN OAK

There’s tremendous value and an incredible community story in this whisky. The distillery is a converted cotton mill on the banks of the River Teith. With the addition of hydro turbines, Deanston generates its own electricity. Grain is purchased exclusively from local farmers. These are a few facts worth sharing with friends, as is this tantalizing whisky, whose notes of lemon zest and sweet barley sugar lead to generous and complex flavours of candied fruit, toffee and honey. The finish is lightly spiced, offering a burst of honeyed malt and sweet oak that is unmistakably Deanston. Absolutely delicious and ideal for a casual gathering of good friends, at home or the local pub.
