The Chase occupies the top floor of a Financial District heritage building on Temperance Street in Toronto—where, come summer, its patio is one of the top draws in town. The driving idea of this restaurant is to attract expense account money from Bay Street.
But they go about the business with substance, not cynicism. The décor combines old brick with modern, sleek furnishings to very pleasant effect—all enhanced by the appealing cachet of the discreet laneway entrance. More important is the solid food offering from Michael Steh. The menu touches all the predictable high-end bases (foie gras, steak, oysters, king crab, truffle) but fields them with more imagination and finesse than most places of this ilk will ever muster. The seafood tower impresses. The Daniel Humm-inspired foie gras-stuffed whole roast chicken is perennially popular. Even the pastas, like squash tortellini with sage, are luxurious in execution.
