Best Bottles: Ableforth’s Bathtub Gin
The name is both a sly nod to the dubious home-brewed gins of the Prohibition era and the fact that this low-production gin from Kent, England, is made using the relatively un-common process of cold-compounding.
In this technique, botanicals are steeped in the base spirit and then filtered out instead of being left behind through distillation. The result: a mildly straw-hued gin of unusual viscosity and assertive botanicals—notably cardamom, cinnamon and clove, and especially the long orange-peel finish. It is a delicious and heady mix, ideal for gin and tonic, and intriguing for a martini. $60
