Brooklyn designer Danielle Trofe’s pretty MushLume lamp is made from biodegradable mushroom material.
The MushLume lighting collection is grown, not manufactured, from mushrooms: mushroom mycelium to be specific. When combined with agricultural byproducts, she creates a beautiful organic, sustainable and biodegradable lamp shade. Each lamp is grown over the course of 4-10 days and is carefully handcrafted throughout the process of molding, growing and drying. The mushroom material is left natural/untreated and may over time age to show golden tonesThe MushLume lighting collection is an initiative to start thinking differently about what products are made from and begin to reimagine a more sustainable future.
The MushLume lighting collection is part of a heartening trend for manufacturers and designers to start thinking differently about what products are made from and begin to reimagine a more sustainable future. This week also introduced us to Loliware, cups made from seaweed the come in flavors like yuzu citrus or matcha tea, that are designed to replace those ubiquitous red disposable cups.
A future filled with products that won’t wind up taking up permanent resident in a landfill site like petroleum-based plastics do?
Magic.
