A new collaborative venture between a pizzeria and a butcher shop might at first not sound like big news.
But when the Italian side of the equation is Terroni, with its string of successful restaurants from Toronto to LA, and the butcher is Cumbrae, indisputably Canada’s finest, we expect interesting results. And a pre-opening visit to the new store proved that our expectations were not just met–but surpassed, and then some, in style. Stock is spread over 20,000 square feet of what was once Postal Station K, on Yonge St. just north of Eglinton. The main floor is a full market, peddling quality staples from fresh produce to great wine, the expected butcher shop–as well as modestly prepared foods from Roman pizza by the slice, to rotisserie chicken (in a Rotisol, no less), smash-burgers, a pasta station, and a gelateria. All can be taken out or enjoyed on site –with wine by the glass. One floor up is a stunning restaurant designed by Giannone Pettricone, replete with leather-lined banquettes and a massive bar. The food will be international bistro: think casual classic built with great ingredients (from pizza and stuffed pasta to a sub- $30 steak frites–or splurge on a rib steak and a bottle of Barolo if you’re in the mood).
The restaurant extends to a third floor, a second bar, and rooftop patio, perfect for private events. It adds up to 500 seats, all told. The first-floor market opens this weekend. The restaurant will follow in 4-6 weeks. We’ll see you there.
Stock T.C is at 2388 Yonge Street in Toronto
