The Gelato World Tour is a handcrafted gelato recipe challenge to find the best and most innovative gelato recipes in the world.
Gelato artisans from Singapore, Tokyo, Chicago, Shenzhen, and Berlin were the bait for 50,000 rabid gelato fans who sampled 5,511 pounds of gelato from 36 gelaterias around the world in Rimini, Italy.
The competition last three years, and the winners are finally in. The world champion prize went to a classic pistachio gelato from Umbrian Alessandro Crispini of Gelateria Crispini.
But lucky Canadians won’t have to travel that far to sample world class gelato. After winning Best Gelato in Canada and Top 3 Flavours in The Americas awards in Chicago in 2016, Ottawa’s Stella Luna Gelato Cafe won the Journalist’s Choice Award for Best Gelato in the World for Rich Chocolate with Bourbon, Truffle Swirl and Maple Candied Pecan.
According to the event organizers, 2017 has been a record year for gelato-eaters as well as makers, with gelato consumption up ten percent from last year. We’re so ready to say bye-bye to overwrought soft-serve concoctions in favour of simpler, cleaner (and lower-fat) gelato. As gelato aficionado Ada Palmer writes, “Gelato is naked ingredients instead of clothed ingredients, so you can see all the imperfections in it.”
A visit to Ottawa has never seemed so urgent.
