WHAT’S GOING ON IN ONTARIO’S GREY COUNTY?

The town of Kimberley is my go-to travel spot in Ontario because it’s the whole package. The alpine scenery makes you feel [you’re] elsewhere, the people are welcoming and interested in uplifting the community, and the dining options are so appropriate. It’s a community made for a modern palate and I’m excited to be apart of a new venture there. Driving down the hills reminds me of travelling towards western Newfoundland.

WHERE DO YOU TAKE FRIENDS FOR SOME FUN?

An afternoon hike on the Bruce Trail and a photo op of Old Baldy [Conservation Area].

WHERE ARE THE BEST EATS?

Jeremy Austin and his wife, Cassie, at The Pine in Collingwood, left a mark on me. Seeing their approach to cuisine was almost like a relief, for lack of a better term. Also, Heart’s in Kimberly. I cannot put into words how much I appreciate this restaurant — it’s truly for everyone.

HOW ABOUT COFFEE?

Savvy Co. in Flesherton is interesting because they transformed an unlikely space into a Cheers-vibe drop-in place for coffee. They have a cool wine-and-cheese program with sharp and engaged staff.

DRINKS?

Heart’s in Kimberly is great for afternoon drinks and snacks. Bruce Wine Bar of the backyard patio at Fabbrica in Thornbury have great options for all.

WHERE DO YOU SHOP FOR FOOD?

Kimberly General Store is the best for cooking at home. Don’t be fooled by the name— there is nothing general about it. Everything is locally sourced and it’s packed with thoughtfully selected products — freshly baked goods, locally sourced vegetables, elixirs, homemade linens, etc. Look out for the friendly gentleman who offers butter tarts.

WHAT SINGLE DISH ENCAPSULATES THE STRENGTH AND VIRTUES OF THE LOCAL CUISINE?

The caramelized beetroot rosette with aged-cheddar jam at The Pine. Jeremy has used red yeast in addition to beets to create this delicious chip. or crisp. The dish was finished with a seasoning of powdered purple cabbage, which added another layer of depth. It shows creativity and a deep understanding of flavour.
