When Chad Falkenberg and Kelly Reynolds, co-founders of renowned Vancouver design firm, Falken Reynolds, were commissioned to design the Cadboro Bay home near the Southern tip of Vancouver Island, the two spent hours with their clients discussing how the family lived and wanted the space to flow.
Having grown up in Edmonton, like one of the homeowners, Falkenberg understood the significance of their move from prairie fields to oceanfront living. Maximizing natural light and ensuring unobstructed sightlines to the bay from every room became the guiding principles of design.
Falkenberg also needed to design a home that could keep pace with the family’s busy lifestyle, including a high-performance kitchen that would function as a hub for daily living and a show-stopping space.
Positioned at the front of the house and flowing directly onto the deck, the kitchen is designed to warmly greet family and friends. Wide walkways around the kitchen island and thoughtful placement of the dishwasher prevent familial bottlenecks. A mix of stainless steel surfaces, concrete floors, and custom wood millwork balance the materials. As Falkenberg explains, the design mandate was “both workshop-inspired and warm.”
When it came to selecting appliances for the kitchen, performance was paramount. For Falkenberg and the homeowners, Gaggenau was the clear choice.

A combination of the 400 Series Speed Microwave and Double Wall Oven offers effortless flexibility, whether for quick meals or more elaborate dinners. The 200 Series Flex Induction Cooktop brings precise, responsive heat control to every dish, a must for cooking enthusiasts. Completing the kitchen, a 400 Series Fully Automatic Espresso Machine—originally at the top of one family member’s wish list—now delights the entire household, infusing each morning with the perfect cup of coffee.
