Fresco Di Masi: Wine for our Times
It's back to the future for this organic winemaker
We’ve long known that sustainability in every productive endeavour is crucial to the long-term future of our planet. But while some producers have struggled to reconcile what they do well with potentially ominous projections of the future, the truly innovative among us are proving that quality and sustainability need not be mutually exclusive. One recent, shining example in the viticulture world is from Masi.
The team at the renowned Venetian winemaker has worked tirelessly to unearth a renewed vision of sustainability in producing two new handcrafted organic wines. Both boast low alcohol content and authentic flavor profiles that harken back to the simplicity of former times – and yet meet today’s high-quality standards.
Both 100 percent organic wines — Fresco di Masi Rosso Verona IGT and Fresco di Masi Bianco Verona IGT, which launched globally in March — are produced in a manner that minimises human intervention with nature; a process which has been described as a return to traditional wine- making techniques.
The name ‘Fresco’ or ‘fresh’ highlights the concept of naturalness. Organic grapes are harvested during the coolest hours and immediately vinified, without drying and without the wine being aged in wood. The grapes are decanted and not filtered, highlighting the very essence of authentic wine. These new wines highlight the cutting-edge spirit of Masi Agricola and its commitment to sustain- ability. Fresco di Masi Rosso offers fruity notes, with cherry aromas recalling its Verona origins, while Fresco di Masi Bianco Verona’s intense notes of white fruit recall the sweetness of pineapple.
The earnest nod to sustainability extends to their packaging: the wines are presented in transparent glass bottles, with cork and beeswax stopper, and no plastic is used. Labels offer a reinterpretation of designs inspired by an 18th Century etching — versions of which adorn beloved Masi wines such as Campofiorin and Amarone Costasera — but with a refreshed color palette.
A fittingly new look for a new outlook on sustainable, quality organic wines.
