Any time somebody asks for tips on buying great value wines — the wines of Chile come to mind first.
Not just for value, but for quality at every price point. Sure, you can splash out in Chile and drop $50 or more (way, way more) if you want — and you’d be well rewarded. But there’s more to Chile than value … this is a region steeped in winemaking history, known especially for embracing emigrating French winemakers in the mid-1800s who brought their knowledge and traditions and kick-started Chile’s modern trajectory.
Today, winemaking in Chile still relies on the grapes of Bordeaux for its core expressions: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec for the reds and Sauvignon Blanc, predominantly, for the whites — with the addition of deftly made Pinot Noir, Carmenere and Chardonnay, among other grapes. The country’s vast territory encompasses vineyard land conducive to all of these varieties, with the north-south range providing plenty of microclimate variability. As well, the coastal (seaside) exposures and the elevation variations delivered by the Andes mountain range mean this country is well equipped for the curve balls that Mother Nature may unleash. Chile is also at the forefront globally in terms of organic and sustainable viticulture and winemaking practices. The upside for wine lovers? It’s all upside. The wines are spectacular.
For sipping or food pairing alike, Chile’s wines cover the bases. The wines are generally ready to enjoy on release, offering peak freshness and vitality, whether white or red. From robust fare (meats, stews, sauces) to fresh and light (seafood, ceviche, tapas) these wines offer not just a complement — they will demand attention and contemplation. Good wines, these. Do not hesitate.
