Congratulations to Patrick Kriss and his team at Alo, our two-time #1 restaurant, for making the cut for the World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2018.
“I wanted to be #1 again (on Canada’s 100 Best) and I wanted to make the World’s 50 Best Restaurants,” said Patrick Kriss of his formerly private hopes for 2018. “I got what I wanted!” They enter Restaurant magazine’s prestigious list at position number 94, just behind Hong Kong’s 8 1/2 Otto e Mezzo Bombana and nipping Enigma, in Barcelona, Spain. It’s a grand achievement for a Canadian restaurant, which very seldom make the list. Only five other Canadian restaurants have ever done it. Our most recent appearance in the ranking was in 2015 when Montreal’s Joe Beef took 81stplace. Our finest showing was in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants inaugural listing, in 2002, when both Eigensinn Farm (Singhampton, ON) and Susur (Toronto) made the top 50. The fact that The World’s 50 Best judges are now assigned international regions makes that particular triumph all but impossible to repeat.
Alo is the first Canadian restaurant to make the list since 2015, the first Toronto restaurant to make the cut in sixteen years, and its rank of 94this an incontestable triumph. “It’s great for the team, from my chef Nick [Bentley], to the management, everyone – they all work so hard,” said Kriss. “This is very rewarding.”
The complete World’s 50 Best Restaurants list is out on June 19th.
