The countertop fully automatic espresso machine has taken a convincing step forward. We test-drove one over a few weeks at the family cottage, where, equipped with nothing more than a good water supply, a few bags of top-quality coffee (Trucillo 100% Arabica) and cartons of milk (and faux-milks of the nut-based variety), our small kitchen became an international café that accommodated all comers.

Ease of operation has of course been the point of automatic espresso ever since the first domestic editions came to market in the 1990s, with their internalized burr grinders and automated tamping.

Now, though, the Bosch 800-series has gone some long way to perfecting this. Its controls allow you to easily alter every part of the coffee-making process to your own taste – from the grinding settings, brewing intensity, all while water portioning in 5 ml increments. But you can also coast along very happily on its automatic factory settings.

All you really have to do to enjoy a coffee that’s just as good and likely better than anything at your pricey local coffee shop is to keep the 800’s water and coffee bean reservoirs full, tap the command for whatever pleases you, and get the right-sized cup under its twin spouts.
