No. 10: The Woodcutter’s Blanket

“I always have a great time at The Woodcutter’s Blanket sipping on a whisky cocktail and enjoying some oysters.” — Dave Mitton, Canadian whisky ambassador

Housed in a refurbished log cabin built in 1938, and often called “the moose” (referring to the faux animals that adorn its exterior), number 10 on our Best Bars list is The Woodcutter’s Blanket, which has come to be known as a key element of Yukon’s history. The iconic log house has been used for many ventures, from its original role as a family residence to a taxidermy business, retail storefront and beyond. “The moose” has now taken fame as a classic cocktail bar that exudes old-world charm in the heart of downtown Whitehorse. Bartenders focus on seasonal ingredients, infusing Negronis with fresh strawberry juice in the summer and muddling tequila with blood orange in the winter.

The Woodcutter’s Blanket holds a simple and timeless vibe with quality drinks and snacks to boot. With a full range of meat, seafood, and vegetarian options, alongside quirky bar snacks like “Chicago mix” popcorn made in-house, this bar doesn’t fall short in any department. Enjoy a drink underneath the stunning Yukon night skies, and perhaps catch the aurora borealis if you’re lucky. On chilly nights, attentive bar staff provide warm blankets. To shake things up a little (literally) we recommend the Lady Grey — Rye, lemon, egg white, earl grey syrup, vanilla, and lavender bitters.

While Whitehorse may seem far, this cocktail bar ensures that the journey will be more than worth it.
