Since opening in September, 2016, Bar Von Der Fels has established itself as one of the best wine bars in Calgary, if not all of Canada.
Outside, a sign on the door reads “No Malbec! No Minors!” And yet, Bar Von Der Fels countless other wine oferings provide something for everyone— from a $10 glass of muscadet to a $30 glass of Chassagne-Montrachet. Owners Thomas Dahlgren and Will Trow, who double as the sole service staff, work alongside chef Eric Hendry to provide guests with a small but mighty “wine and dine” experience.
“I’ve discovered so many new producers from the personalized service here. The wines by the glass can change by the hour, and I always leave having discovered new gems.” says Jason Yamasaki, Sommelier at Joey Restaurants.
While the wines are the real draw here, past the bar, a pocket-sized kitchen prepares unfussy small plates conceived to perfectly accompany the full, ever-evolving range of wines. Bar Von Der Fels proves that good things come in small packages, whether it be a glass of Cornas reserve or Hendry’s tomato leaf linguine served with an aromatic duck broth.
The minimalist space which holds high attention to detail and a flare of anonymity seats around 20, making Bar Von Der Fels what might be one of the smallest restaurants in Calgary, yet still one of the best.
Bar Von Der Fels is No. 7 on our inaugural Canada’s Best Bars list
