Civil Works’ The Forger’s Flask cocktail

This fruity twist on the sturdy and spirit-forward Toronto cocktail is exactly the kind of drink that wants fancy custom ice as a finishing touch.

The Forger’s Flask

Makes 10 drinks.

INGREDIENTS


  • 600 ml (2½ cups) toasted coconut Canadian rye whisky
  • 225 ml (1 cup) dry vermouth
  • 120 ml (½ cup) Fernet-Branca
  • 90 ml (⅓ cup) sour-cherry oleo
  • 10 whisky cherries (for garnish)
  • 10 orange peels (for zesting)

METHOD


In advance, combine 250 ml (1 cup) fresh, frozen or jarred sour cherries with 250 ml (1 cup) sugar in a non-reactive container and set aside at room temperature for 48 hours. Drain syrup.

Also in advance, toast 50 grams (½ cup) coconut flakes and add to 600 ml (2 ½ cups) rye whisky. Steep at room temperature for 48 hours and strain through a fine mesh sieve.

Batch
Combine rye, vermouth, fernet and oleo in a mixing vessel and stir. Bottle and refrigerate.

Serve
Pour into an old fashioned glass over a single king cube of ice. Garnish with a cherry and express the oils from the orange into the glass.
