Is Food the Ultimate Travel Guide?

A recent story in The Independent called “50 Meals to Eat in your Lifetime” got us thinking about the relationship between food and travel.

There are myriad reasons why people travel. There are ancient wonders to behold, rousing festivals to attend and entirely different ways of living to experience.

For a good portion of travel fiends though, it’s all about the food.

We don’t doubt the adrenaline rush of running with the bulls in Pamplona; we just think there’s an argument to be made for spending your time seeking out the best cordero al chilindrón in Spain. It’s less risky and far more delicious.

Why not build your Roman travel schedule around hunting down the perfect bowl of simple, but devastating cacio e pepe?  Or turn your trip to Greece into a quest for real-deal spanakopita. Even a quick trip south of the border to Connecticut can turn the everyday to exotic when it takes the form of a white clam pizza.

Need some inspiration to start mapping out your trip?  You can check out the Independent’s drool-worthy itinerary here , fellow sybarite.

And if can’t make it to Rome, you can console yourself with this sublime recipe for cacio e pepe from cookbook Tasting Rome.
