La Cité du Vin is for Wine Lovers

La Cité du Vin

Little kids have Disneyland. Teenagers and millennials have their parents’ empty houses. What do the grown-ups have? La Cité du Vin: the new mecca for wine lovers.

An adult theme park for oenophiles, La Cité du Vin is being heralded as the Guggenheim of Wine.  The museum opened this month on the banks of the Garonne River in Bordeaux. With construction costing upwards of €81 million, the gallery is an architectural masterpiece worthy of  Dionysus.

XTU architects Anouk Legendre and Nicholas Desmazieres designed the building to reflect the swirl of wine in a glass, echoing the splendour of postmodernist art.  Every aspect of the building is intended to impress upon the visitor the elegance and significance of wine’s history.

Ironically, most of the experience doesn’t involve wine consumption. Instead, visitors are educated on historical wine trends, cultural differences, production techniques, and flavour analysis. Don’t worry though – at the end of the tour, visitors are taken to the top floor bar where they can enjoy 800 different wines (hopefully not all at one time) while taking in the breathtaking 360-degree-view of Bordeaux.

We can’t think of a better excuse to pick up a wine glass, call the travel agent and head to Bordeaux.
