Nespresso’s end game hasn’t changed in 30 years – their total commitment to design innovation remains a company hallmark.
Through this commitment, Nespresso endeavours to impact the consumer experience. Focus has been placed on utilizing advanced technology to improve how the consumer enjoys their daily cup. The very first Nespresso machine, designed in 1986, drew inspiration from Luigi Bezzera’s original concept, adding its revolutionary approach to encapsulated coffee crafted for dedicated machines.
Utilizing the proper technology and the right capsule design, the direct impact on the consumer has guided product development over the years. Anne-Claude Truchement, the accessories product manager at Nespresso, and Augustin Scott de Martinville, the designer from BIG-GAME studio, collaborated on the new PURE collection. Both were eager to inform us of the design process when we met at Nespresso’s company headquarters in Berlin.
First, Truchement demonstrated how Nespresso carefully considers the user during the product accessories design process. Intended to elevate intensity for an unrivaled coffee tasting experience, award-winning Swiss design firm BIG-GAME crafted elegant porcelain accessories with a unique contemporary design. With an entire year devoted to mastering the ergonomics of the design, the PURE collection combines geometric shapes with a round cup on the inside and a square outside.
“We were challenged by the sensory experts at Nespresso to create a collection that fused timeless materials with contemporary design,” says de Martinville. “Not only is Nespresso about premium coffee, it is also very innovative. It has come up with ideas which are a bit disruptive and we wanted to keep a bit of this essence within our collection,” said de Martinville. With crisp angles and soft curves for the ideal tasting experience, the cups and saucers have been strategically and skillfully designed for every type of brew from espresso to lungo, and cappuccino to mug.
