Don’t let the Happy Valley Turf Club sign deter you. Behind the horse-race bookie exterior is a hidden speakeasy — diners must place a bet on King Louie to be let into the bar. Once you’re inside, you’re greeted by the opulent barrel-shaped ceiling covered with horseshoes and the palm-tree wallpaper conjuring Victorian-era India and, of course, Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book. Drinks like To Frighten a Mongoose (Beefeater gin, medium dry sherry, pistachio rose orgeat) and The Braggart (a tropical milk punch with whisky, grilled pineapple and coconut ginger tea) are crafted to transport you, as are the warm curries and pakoras from the kitchen.
The menu is visually beautiful and filled with technical and curious sips.” Rebecca Felgate
