Best Bars 2026 No. 4

Civil Liberties

Through the ups (numerous awards) and the downs (a major flood that shuttered the bar for half of 2025), Civil has never lost sight of its soul. Since mopping up and reopening, this no-menu bar has jumped right back into serving up custom cocktails in a space that pivots from alcohol-nerd symposium to full-on party — that is, depending on the hour. Grab a new (and now more comfortable) seat at the bar and enjoy a Nitro Espresso Martini. Or take a bartender-guided tour through the house-made liqueurs, like the herby Free Pizza or the bright blue Heisenberg. Civil may spark its own peaceful protest against dull, ordinary drinks, but, at its core, it’s still the platonic ideal of an honest neighbourhood bar.

Best Seat
Grab the seat in the middle of the long bar to check out the burst pipe that caused the flood, which has been preserved for posterity.

SPLIT THE G
Dive into the debate over which of two taps pours the creamiest stout. Co-owner and Guinness fanatic Nick Kennedy always orders from the left tap.
