The Vero Bartender competition from Amaro Montenegro attracts the best bartenders from around the world –  in 2022, 17 countries participated.

This year, the concept-based competition revolved around  “A Timeless Spirit,” a journey back in time focused on the vibrant 90s. Over 100 people submitted cocktails, with 10 of the best flown to Toronto to compete. This year’s winner is Dylan Brentwood. He’s spent the last four years at Best Bars favourite Bar Kismet, is a two-time Tales of the Cocktail Cocktail Apprentice Program alumnus, a graduate with distinction from BAR 5 Day, and has a solid reputation for his playful drink style. That playfulness is clearly evident in his winning cocktail, Dem Apples, a heady cocktail of Amaro Montenegro, Peychaud’s, a Cheddar popcorn-washed Smith & Cross, and caramel apple soda.

Next stop for Dylan is Bologna, Italy to compete against the other international winners. Good luck, Dylan, and don’t forget to pack your plaid shirt.

Amaro Montenegro, perfected in 1885, boasts 40 global botanicals in a secret recipe that earned it the 2018 Best Liqueur title at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Originally Elisir Lungavita, it was renamed in 1896 for Princess Elena of Montenegro. The alchemist-inspired bottle design remains iconic. Recognized in European expos and praised by poet Gabrielle D’Annunzio, Amaro Montenegro has maintained its position as Italy’s leading liqueur, showcasing a 130-year commitment to tradition and quality.
